John Singer Sargent

The Boston Museum of Fine Arts is home to thousands of works of art. However, the building itself is adorned with some wonderful murals by John Singer Sargent including those shown here within the rotunda.

He worked on the murals for several years up until his death in 1925. If you are a Sargent fan, there are, of course, several dozen of his portraits and drawings that can be admired at eye-level throughout the museum. And if that is not enough, you can walk over to the nearby Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and see more, including some lovely water colors, and one of my favorites, El Jaleo, a large (12 feet wide!) painting of a Spanish flamenco dancer.

The Museum of Fine Arts building was designed by Boston architect Guy Lowell and built in phases, the first completed in 1909. The building was significantly expanded in just the past year, making it one of the largest in the country.
